It may seem counterintuitive to want to stay cheerful when you're depressed. It may appear impossible, but it is not. I had been feeding into my sadness for a long time before I discovered I could begin to shift my perspective. In this article, I'll offer some techniques I've picked up along the way to help you stay happy even when you're feeling down.
1. Stay Positive When You're Depressed by Expressing Gratitude
I used to be a really ungrateful person if I'm being honest. I had a victim mindset and decided to feel sorry for myself all of the time. This definitely did not make me feel any better. It actually made me feel worse.
Start small if you're having trouble being appreciative. Are you generally in good health? Have you found a place to call home? Do you have someone that cares about you? Even if it doesn't seem like it, there are always reasons to be grateful. When I'm feeling low, I prefer to write down every small, tiny thing I can think of to be grateful for.

You may not feel better right away, but if you do this on a daily basis, you'll be able to find a way to be cheerful even when you're depressed.
2. Concentrate on yourself
One of the most essential things I did to help me stay positive while I was depressed was to focus on myself. I began eating healthier recipes, exercising, meditating, reading books on personal development, and journaling.
When you're depressed, it can be difficult to find the drive to start taking care of yourself. Keep in mind that action motivates people. You will be more motivated to take action again if you take action, even if you have to push it.
3. Help others to be positive in the face of depression by paying it forward
Make someone else happy if you want to feel good about yourself. Paying it forward entails much more than simply buying someone a cup of coffee in line at Starbucks. With something as easy as a compliment, you can make someone happy.
Consider a few occasions throughout the day when you could brighten someone's day. You will feel better as a result.
4. Listen to Uplifting Music

Music is one thing that can instantly transform my mood. When I listen to music, I can go from feeling down in the dumps to feeling upbeat within 10 minutes (Mindfully Choosing Music for Playlists Improves My Mood). Pay attention to the lyrics, listen to the various instruments, and change your focus to the songs that are playing. When I listen to music that makes me happy, it helps me to forget about whatever is bothering me.
Dance to the music instead of just listening to it. Getting into the present moment through moving your body is a terrific technique to do so.
These suggestions will not heal your depression, but they will help you stay cheerful more often when you are depressed. What do you do to maintain your optimistic attitude?
