Putin says Russia has 'nowhere to retreat' over Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 21 that Russia "has no way back" in its confrontation with the United States over Ukraine and will be forced to react firmly unless the West abandons "aggressive actions".

Reuters reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 21 that Moscow had no way back on Ukraine.

"US actions in Ukraine are at our doorstep. They should understand that we have no way back. If the West continues its aggressive actions, we will take countermeasures against the military. adequate technology and react harshly to unfriendly moves," the Russian president said.

Putin did not specify Moscow's retaliatory measures. However, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov previously warned that Russia could deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe in response to NATO's plans.

President Putin's comments were made before Russian military officials as Moscow is pressing the US and NATO to respond to proposals on actions to ensure security from the West.

Russia has denied accusations by Ukraine and the United States that Moscow is preparing to attack Ukraine early next month. Russia has also said it needs commitment from the West - including NATO's promise not to conduct military operations in Eastern Europe - because its security is at stake.

President Volodymr Zelenskiy of Ukraine said on December 17 that he was ready to meet with Russia for "direct negotiations or informal negotiations, and does not mind any form". However, Moscow has repeatedly stated that it does not see the benefit of this meeting if the agenda is not clear.

US Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Karen Donfried also said at a press conference that Washington was ready to communicate with Moscow through three channels - bilateral, NATO-Russia Council, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
