10 Time Management Tips That Work

Do you have a strong desire to become more organized and/or productive? Do you go through the day in a flurry of activity and then wonder why you haven't gotten much done? Then these time management techniques are for you; they'll help you boost your productivity while keeping your cool.

1. Recognize that time management is an urban legend.

The first thing to grasp about time management is that there are only 24 hours in a day, no matter how well planned we are. There is no such thing as time. All we have control over is ourselves and how we spend the time we have. This is very appreciated. Internalize what you've learned. And then go on to the following tip as soon as feasible.

2. Figure out where you're squandering your time.

Many of us are victims of time-wasters who waste time that could be spent doing something more beneficial. What time bandits do you have? Do you waste too much time perusing the web, reading emails, posting on Facebook, texting, or making personal calls?

Are you a squanderer of time? Tracking everyday activities allows you to get a clear image of how much time you spend on different tasks, which is the first step toward successful time management.

3. Set time management objectives

Remember that the goal of time management is to change your actions, not to change the clock. Eliminating your personal time-wasters is an excellent place to start. Set a goal for yourself to not take personal phone calls or answer to non-work related text messages while you're at work for one week.

4. Create a time management strategy.

Consider this a follow-up to the third time management suggestion. The goal is to gradually adjust your behaviors in order to attain whatever broad goal you've set for yourself, such as improving productivity or reducing stress. As a result, you must not only set clear goals, but also track them over time to see if they are being met.

5. Make use of time management software

The first step to physically controlling your time is to know where it's going now and plan how you'll spend it in the future, whether you use a planner, a software tool, or a phone app. A application like Outlook, for example, allows you to easily arrange events and can be programmed to remind you of them in advance, making time management easier.

6. Be ruthless with your priorities.

Each day should begin with a session selecting the activities for the day and establishing a performance benchmark. How many of your 20 things do you really need to complete on any given day?

7. Develop the ability to delegate and/or outsource.

Delegation is one of the most difficult skills for many business owners to master, but no matter how tiny your company is, you can't afford to be a one-person show – you need to delegate part of your responsibilities. Delegation divides up the chores that you'd be better off delegating to someone else, allowing you to make the most of your time.

8. Create and stick to routines as much as possible.

While crises will inevitably come, you will be far more productive if you can stick to a schedule for the majority of the time. Creating and sticking to a schedule allows most people to get right to work on their daily duties rather than wasting time getting started.

9. Make it a habit to set time limits on tasks.

If you let it, reading and responding to email, for example, can take up your entire day. Instead, set a time restriction for this work of one hour every day and stick to it. (The simplest way to achieve this is to set out a specific amount of time for this work rather than responding to emails as they come in.)

10. Make that your systems are well-organized.

Are you wasting a lot of time on your computer looking for files? Spend some time putting together a file management system. Is your filing system causing you to lose time? Reorganize it so that you can find what you're looking for quickly.

A Bonus Tip: Your Time Is Yours Here's the most crucial time management tip of all: Your time is yours. Once you've confronted the time management myth and taken charge of your time, you can be in command and accomplish what you want.
